The Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department serves an area of approximately 200 square miles in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas (map).  The coverage area consists of the City of Edinburg and the surrounding rural areas outside the city limits.  The rural areas are part of Hidalgo County Fire District #4 and are served through a contract with Hidalgo County.

The Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department was organized on May 24, 1926.  Since then, the city has grown from a town of about 4800 citizens to a population of approximately 48,000.  The fire department has also grown to include some 60 volunteer members and 4 fire stations.  Over the years, the Edinburg VFD has become a member of a number of fire service organizations, including the National Fire Protection Association, the National Volunteer Fire Council, and the State Firemen's & Fire Marshals' Association of Texas.
